Jhalana

On the very edges of Jaipur, Jhalana exists as a startling contradiction. This is wilderness stitched into the city, an unfenced forest where leopards move freely against the silhouettes of hills, fort walls, and distant urban sprawl. Few places in the world offer such proximity to a large carnivore within a living metropolis, and fewer still do so with such consistency.

Once a reserved hunting forest of Jaipur’s former rulers, Jhalana endured decades of pressure from mining and urban expansion before conservation efforts reversed its decline. Spread across a compact stretch of the ancient Aravalli hills, one of the oldest mountain systems on Earth, Jhalana has emerged as a global example of urban wildlife resilience. Its semi-arid, dry deciduous thorn forest supports one of the highest leopard densities in India, sustained by a strong prey base and minimal disturbance. More than a refuge, Jhalana demonstrates how large predators can persist alongside human settlements when space is respected and thoughtfully managed.
