Introducing Rann of Kutch

A landscape with no need to perform.

Vast, elemental, and almost surreal, the Rann of Kutch is one of the Indian subcontinent’s most extraordinary landscapes. Here, land and sky stretch into one another, and scale becomes the defining experience. The Rann is not a place of excess life, but of precise adaptation. In winter t wears the

The word Rann refers to a marsh or desert, an apt description for a landscape that shifts dramatically with the seasons. Once part of the Arabian Sea, tectonic movements and river sedimentation transformed this region into a vast seasonal salt desert. Today, it is divided into two distinct yet interconnected regions: the Great Rann of Kutch, a seemingly endless white expanse that floods during the monsoon and crystallises in winter; and the Little Rann of Kutch, a saline desert punctuated by scrub, grasslands, wetlands, and elevated islands known as bets. Ecologically, the Little Rann holds exceptional significance as home to the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, the last refuge of the endangered Indian wild ass. The Rann also supports vast congregations of migratory birds, most notably flamingos, which breed here in globally significant numbers. Sparse vegetation, salt-tolerant grasses, and specialised desert scrub complete an ecosystem defined by resilience.
