Sattal,literally meaning seven lakes, is a rare freshwater ecosystem, an interconnected cluster of pristine lakes set amid dense oak and pine forests. Once part of a colonial-era tea-growing belt in Kumaon, the plantations have long receded, leaving behind an unspoiled biome that has drawn naturalists and birdwatchers for decades. The lakes anchor the landscape, creating calm, layered habitats where water, forest, and sky intersect seamlessly. A short climb higher brings you to Pangot, a small mountain village perched at around 6,500 feet. Surrounded by mixed temperate forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, Pangot has quietly evolved into one of the finest birding locations in the Himalayas too. Its elevation and forest diversity allow species from the plains, mid-hills, and higher altitudes to overlap, making it ecologically rich despite its modest size.
