Velavadar

Velavadar is a medley of horizons,a rare testament to openness in a world where grasslands are fast disappearing. In the heart of Saurashtra, this quiet jewel stands as a beacon of hope, safeguarding one of the planet’s most threatened ecosystems. Here, the sun caresses the land without bias, and the wilderness reveals itself without concealment. Beauty is expressed freely across flat plains, dry grasses, thorny scrub, and skies that stretch beyond measure. In this landscape, life moves in the open, defined by running blackbucks, hunting wolves, and skies alive with birds that make Velavadar one of India’s great grassland sanctuaries.

Velavadar protects one of India’s last and finest savannah-like grassland ecosystems. Shaped by seasons and proximity to the Gulf of Khambhat, parts of the park transform during the monsoon, when low-lying southern stretches flood to form seasonal wetlands and mudflats. This shifting landscape creates a mosaic of habitats, grasslands, saline flats, scrub, and wetlands, each supporting a distinct cast of life. The park is best known as a stronghold of the blackbuck, with one of the largest and healthiest populations in the country. Alongside them a discreet community of smaller mammals. Here, predators take centre stage: the Indian wolf patrols the plains with quiet authority, while striped hyenas, foxes, golden jackals, and jungle cats follow the rhythms of the open land.Above it all, Velavadar is a birding revelation, home to over a hundred recorded species and one of the world’s most significant winter roosts for migratory harriers, alongside floricans, cranes, flamingos, pelicans, storks, larks, and sandgrouse.
